Many people prefer loose-leaf tea over bagged tea. We get it. We continue to sell premium quality loose-leaf tea and have for many years. We love it. Many who love loose-leaf tea may tell you that bagged tea isn’t healthy for you and has less quality tea than loose-leaf. Let’s talk about why that statement isn’t always true.
Not All Bagged Tea is Created Equal
Many tea bags on the market can leach unwanted chemicals or plastic into your tea. We’re guessing this really isn’t the kind of infusion you’re looking for. When shopping for teabags you want to be on the lookout for plant-based materials that have not been treated with bleach. This will help you avoid a chemically laden tea full of tiny microplastics. You definitely want all the health benefits of tea without all of the unwanted garbage and some teabags are just better than others.
In addition, you want a tea bag that gives your tea room enough to expand or fan out. This will help infuse a full profile of flavor into each cup. Some tea bags have the tea so tight that it has very little room to breathe. Be on the lookout for pyramid-style bags that have the extra room the tea needs.
Let’s Talk Tea Grade
Grading tea is a little more complex than this simple explanation, but tea is generally graded based on tea size: whole-leaf tea, broken-leaf tea, and dust and fanning. Whole Leaf is your highest-grade tea while Dust and Fanning is your lowest-grade tea. Here’s the breakdown.
- Whole Leaf: This is your highest grade. The leaves are generally hand-processed and include the young, unopened leaves found at the top of the tea plant known as tips. This grade offers an infusion with a greater depth of flavor and nuance in each sip?
- Broken Leaf: This is your median-grade leaf which is still good quality but involves leaves that have broken down into smaller leaves during processing. These leaves will steep quicker and involve a more astringent flavor.
- Dust and Fannings: This is your lowest grade containing the leftover tea particles after processing the higher-grade tea. This tea dust steeps quickly producing a stronger and astringent taste.
It’s important to talk about tea grade because in general, teabags, especially store-bought teabags, contain the lowest tea grades: dust and fanning. The best tea does not look like tea dust at all. The leaves are full and intact. This is a sign of a higher quality tea.
