Everyone knows that natural beverages like coffee and tea contain caffeine. What might come as a surprise however, is just how much those levels can vary depending on preparation and grades, and how those levels compare to the different types of soda and energy drinks.
There are many factors that influence the natural levels of caffeine in coffee and tea, so the following isn’t meant to be exact, but more of a general estimate. Caffeine of course, is added to soft drinks, so those levels are more precise.
A general rule, a cup of Black Coffee contains around 90mg of caffeine.
The average cup of Black Tea contains significantly less – around 45mg.
Oolong Tea generally contains 30mg
Green Tea – 20mg
White Tea – 10mg
However, these general numbers can vary greatly depending on several important factors:
1. The type of tea or coffee
2. Manner of preparation
3. The grade/quality of product
For example, powdered green teas like Matcha, where the entire leaf is consumed, can easily contain at least as much if not more caffeine than a cup of coffee.
Although there is still some debate, most caffeine experts agree that the level of caffeine in tea directly corresponds to how long the tea is allowed to steep. Longer steep times equal higher levels of caffeine and visa versa. Even de-caffeinated coffees and teas still contain some caffeine.
