How Naturally Scented Jasmine Green Tea is Made
The flowering jasmine plant thrives in similar geographic conditions to China’s tea regions. It is cultivated for cut flowers, oils and syrups. The buds of the jasmine plant are used to naturally scent scent green tea.
High-grade jasmine green teas are created when quality tea leaves are blended with freshly picked jasmine blossoms. You will find that cheaper teas are often scented with jasmine extract or artificial flavors, which does not yield the same depth of flavor and complexity as naturally scented jasmine teas.
Great skill goes into producing naturally flavored jasmine green tea. Jasmine flowers are typically picked during the hottest part of the summer. The blossoms are then mixed with the green leaves in a space that is carefully controlled for temperature and humidity. Tea leaves are highly absorbent and take on the fragrance of the jasmine flower simply by coming into close contact with the blossoms.
Premium jasmine green teas may mingle tea leaves with fresh blossoms several times. Fresh jasmine blossoms are combined with the leaves over and over to create varying levels of naturally scented floral flavor. It may take anywhere from 24 hours to a few weeks to achieve the desired intensity of the jasmine flavors.
The final step is firing to completely remove all moisture. For certain jasmine teas such as our Organic Jasmine with Flowers Green Tea, a few of the dried jasmine blossoms are left in the blend to add to the beautiful appearance of the tea.
