What is Monkey Picked Oolong Tea?

Nuanced and sophisticated, Monkey Picked Oolong is the ideal connoisseur’s tea, yet it appeals to tea newbies as well. Its note-worthy aroma and full-bodied flavor, with medium caffeine level all contribute to an exceptional tea.

The name has taken on a poetic meaning. Despite legends to the contrary, the name “Monkey Picked” refers to the highest grade of oolong tea a tea artisan has to offer. Our Monkey Picked Oolong is the best from its maker, and a truly noteworthy tea.

The tea leaves are beautiful. Nurtured by clouds and mist, they open to offer an unforgettable aroma and smooth, complex flavors. “Monkey-picked” suggests the quality of the tea, rather than a nod to the harvest method.

Excellent for multiple infusions, the unfurling leaf of this exquisite oolong produces a golden cup and brings forward an earthy aroma. The flavors are complex, with accents of roasted nuts and buttery caramel. Honey undertones shine through with a subtle sweetness in the cup. The smooth-bodied infusion offers a clean, refreshing finish and a lingering calm.

Monkey Picked Oolong Tea

How is Monkey Picked Oolong Tea Produced?

Our exquisite Monkey Picked tea comes from China. Oolong tea originated in the mountains of southeast China, the Fujian Province, near Taiwan. Production soon spread to Taiwan, where it is considered to be an art form. More recently, India, Thailand and certain other countries started trying their hands at making oolong, too.

Oolong tea’s processing is more complex and skill-intensive than the processing of most other tea types. For many years, various oolong processing techniques were considered to be proprietary secrets.

After it is harvested, oolong leaves are spread out in a warm, humid area to wilt. This decreases their moisture content and softens them for the next step of processing. Then, the leaves are either rolled or twisted to break the cell walls, allowing the leaves to oxidize somewhat. After they have partially oxidized, they are heated, often in a hot-air tumbler or in a wok-like vessel. The heating stops oxidation and redistributes the moisture content in the leaves.

Often the rolling / twisting, oxidizing and heating steps are repeated several times to get the flavor and aroma just right. When the tea is oxidized and shaped to the liking of the producer, then the leaves are dried. Drying preserves them, so you can enjoy your tea at peak flavor.

Drinking Monkey Picked Oolong

How to drink Monkey Picked Oolong

Oolong tea can be brewed multiple times, and it offers a slightly different flavor profile with each brew. This gives it a great cost-per-cup value and a special appeal for foodies interested in honing their tasting and pairing skills.

Here are what some customers are saying about our Monkey Picked Oolong:

“Great quality! The Monkey-Picked Oolong [at Fusion Teas] costs about a third of the place at the mall (as well as another source I use on the internet), with WAY better quality. Steeping reveals very full leaves. I can’t wait to order a few of my other teas!”

– Harry

“I love tea and have been purchasing it at a local tea shop but it’s EXPENSIVE there. This [Fusion Teas] tea is just as good – better in fact. Nice, smooth fruity and full bodied. Used 2 tsp 3 times, great value!”

– Ken

“So good. Seriously, just buy it.”

– Sara
